It is for an assignment yet i cant find anything on how it works!

Basically it's where the camera store the images before writing it to the memory card. Most only have one or two image in can store in the buffer, but some of the SLR now have bigger size in the buffer to store images so that you can do longer continuous shots and not having to worry that camera will stop in a middle of an action shot.

Think of it like a CD burner. It also need a buffer to store files in a temporary folder before it write the data onto the CD. That's the best way to describe it. Hope it helps.

As you take photos, they are first stored in the camera's internal memory called "buffer". When the buffer is full you'll have to wait untill one or more of the images has been transferred to the memory card before taking any more pic. Trust me I'm only 14 and I know this because I have been doing a lot of studying about cameras and what's inside them and how they work.
