Definitely the Northwest quadrant of DC, though it has the most expensive neighborhoods in the entire metro area. There are pockets of somewhat affordable apartments, and they're less expensive because they're not close to a Metro station...however the bus system is extensive and consistent. There is an area called Glover Park, just north of Georgetown...nice area with lots of trees and a park-like setting that has several nice buildings, among the nicest and least expensive are around 42nd St. NW and Davis. You can get a 1 bedroom for around $1300, studios for $1000. You can also find some deals in Connecticut Heights, the area along Connecticut Avenue north of the Van Ness Metro station. Connecticut Ave is filled with buildings on either side heading north from Van Ness, and since it's less convenient to the Metro north of here...rents go down. However, there are buses that pass right in front of your building that'll take you downtown or to the nearest metro station. The Roberta at 5429 Connecticut Ave NW is a nice one. Another area that has some decent buildings and a bit more convenient is Dupont West...sandwiched between the Dupont Circle neighborhood and Georgetown. A large Studio apartment at Rock Creek Gardens, 2511 Q St NW goes for $950 a month and includes most of your utilities. This would be the most convenient for getting around. Also check out Ordway Gardens at the website below...

Where you're coming from will determine what you think is cheap.
Everyone here's telling you the same thing...stay in Northwest (NW) DC. Forget about the SW thing or NE or SE...that's where the crime is. Virginia is OK, and Montgomery County MD. Parts of Prince George's county (PG) are scary too.
Here's a link that should give you an idea of what's available right now.

and here's a link to the DC area Metro System.

There's a place to click on to see the bus routes too.
Come back and ask again when you've narrowed it down a bit
Good luck!

roslyn, va is right on the metro line and it has a ton of non-descript apartment towers. Not much charm but Georgetown is right across the Key Bridge.

If you want to live in the city, stay in the NW quadrant.

If you want to live on Capitol Hill, get as close to the Capitol as you can afford.

My two favorite places to live in the D.C. area are Cleveland Park (right on the metro line, great old-fashioned movie theater, cool ethnic food) in DC proper and Old Town Alexandria.

Two places to check out: washingtondc.craigslist.org for apartments & roommates. and DC City Paper which is also online.

Good luck!

Try the SW Waterfront area. There are several apartment buildings and townhomes there with affordable rent and are walking distance to public transportation (SW Waterfront green line, and Federal Center SW, blue and orange lines, 2 bus stops as well as the Circulator bus). There is also a Safeway and a CVS across from the Waterfront metro station.

Living in DC is not Cheap, the less expensive apartments are going to be pretty crumby. Is there anyway you can find a roommate? I live 25 miles outside and the apts. were 900 and up. Check Apartment finder websites.

Be careful going too cheap, you could get yourself killed that way around there. We live on the peninsula and I don't go to dc but we see the news from there....not good!
