If you want to start down the path to professional photography, you MUST get an SLR. I would consider moving right to digital for many reasons, but one compelling reason is that you can see your results almost instantly and this will help you learn about photography. Besides, Nikon is about to discontinue all of their film cameras except the most expensive and the cheapest. This should tell us all something about the future of photography.
For $800 or so, consider the Nikon D50 with a "decent" lens, such as their Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens and not the "kit" lens. Get at least a 1 GB SD memory card with a decent write speed. I like the Sandisk Ultra II. My wife has exactly this set-up and she is very happy with it. You'd like a good flash, too, but maybe later... $$$
This will not really serve you to far into a professional career, but you will be able to get very professional results. You can build an assortment of a few lenses that you can continue to use when you upgrade to a real professional level camera.
Others will recommend Canon cameras and they are a fine choice. I just happen to be a Nikon user. You find passionate arguments about which is better - Canon or Nikon - but it's the same as asking someone if they prefer a Mercedes to a BMW.
Or, go to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp and see what they select for you.

Is it the camera that makes the professional photographer ???? Must go this way, must go that way.... It's about composition and a big dose of serendipity. You think you want to be a photographer.....go to MIT's OCW and check out the cources..... then vollenteer to do a wedding for the experience of it .....for free... Try to sell you best picture on ebay for more than $5... What do you know about photography....??? IMHO.... I learned long ago in a rolll of 24 pix it was tuff to get one good picture.... it's takes 100's..... I just saw a Neiman marcus shoot..... three days,,, five people, thousands of pictures and the cataloge spread was four pages.... It's about light in the end and how you control it..... I'd rather get 300 pix on my little canon that I know I'll always have with me for that wonderfull rare candid..... and with that I can study composition, light, etc.... my SD630 has more controls than any camera 10 years ago and lens features to rival any SLR.
I know, I was that AV guy with the vest and 20 lenses from fish to Giant telephotos with gels and always my 2x converter, dam the paralax, who woulda guessed flares would come into style..... but then my advise is to try it first like the first photographers did...... pinhole.... ummmmm i wonder if the tinfoil over my canon will work???? best wishes

for a starter and since its all digital now plus i only know more about nikon stuff, i'll tell you about nikon cameras below $800 including the lens. frankly very good digital cameras are nearer to $1000 and will go beyond that. so for about 800bux, you could get D50 with 18-55mm lens and 55-200mm lens from www.bhphotovideo.com
its not a very pro camera but thats about what your budget can do for you.
for film, you can start with nikon N80 (or F80 if imported stock) and couple it with kit lens and a 60mm micro lens fr macrophotography and you should be set for now. this setup should cost you about 700bux

You will hear the Cannon, Nikon, and Olympus dudes pushing their ideas, but don't over look Pentax. You'll save some bucks for such things as a card, card reader, the two remote controls (wired and IR) and get an excellent, well constructed system for much less of a hit on the ol' wallet.
