your gf grinds her teeth in her sleep because of stress in her life. she may not be conscious of this, but she may be grinding even when she's awake. when something frustrates or angers her, she may grit without realizing. her dentist will notice this without her mentioning it to him. but now she knows because of you. it's not a small problem because you can grind down the enamel in your teeth as well as cause a misalignment to the structure of your jaw and it locks up. this happens to me, and so when i yawn or take a big bite my jaw locks up. for me the gritting occurred when i was asleep and when i was awake, so i wore a guard. i've made myself very conscious and aware of situations that cause stress, so now i don't grind while i'm awake, but still do during sleep.

If people grind their teeth when they are awake it is due to stess, or sometimes it's just a habit or an obsessive problem. But when you grind your teeth when you sleep, it's done unconsciously - not caused by anything, usually right from when you were a baby or a small child. There's obviously nothing you can do to stop yourself from grinding your teeth besides a mouth guard worn at night. I have grinded my teeth since i was little (by the way my dentist says he has never seen anyone with straighter teeth that has never had braces...but it's not good because by the time i'm 50 they will be almost gone if i didn't wear a mouth guard at night!).
If your girlfriend's grinding bothers you, try ear plugs (or just learn to get used to it).

It is called Bruxism, grinding of the teeth, children do it most often when they sleep because of tension or stress. My daughters orthodontist said it is harmless. Adults do it too, also because of stress from the day . Alot of meth addicts do it because they unconsciously tense their jaw muscles while they are on the drug and it causes severe damage to their teeth, they actually grind the teeth down to the gum line. A mild muscle relaxant taken at bedtime can help releive this condition, whether you use drugs or not.

I use to grind my teeth, not that i knew i was doing it,but sometimes I'd dream that my jaw was expanding..i know, weird, but later i developed jaw and ear pain and the dentist took xrays and said i had a condition called T.M.J. disorder. My jaw was not lined up. He said it's due to teeth grinding and that's usually how we handle stress. Your girlfriend should go to the dentist and be fitted for a bite block. She'd not grind her teeth and she'd hopefully not suffer from T.M.J. pain...oh yeah, and you could get some zzzzzzzz's

Grind their teeth? Is that what you mean? I used to do it, and my ortho told me it was because of stress. I wear a bite-guard now at night so my teeth don't grind down to nothing.

It could be TMJ - talk to your dentist, it is not a good habit to get into.
