Americans need not need a visa to Britain because the latter are better in their place and are assumed to return.

You can't just turn up and stay here. You can get a 6 month tourist visa but not work, and they may ask for proof of your funds to support yourself. If you found someone willing to employ you, the employer would apply for a work visa. After that visa expires you would have to leave. If you've lived in the country for a certain number of years you can apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Certain groups of American citizens can come to work in Britain without difficulty. Entry clearance is needed; you get that from the British consular office serving your US residence. Here's a link to information on how it works:
http://www.britainusa.com/ny/
There is a friendship, commerce and navigation treaty that makes it easy for senior and technical employees sent to work in the UK, and for professionals like lawyers to move there. It is also easy for investors and pensioners with substantial income who will not otherwise work in the UK to come. And spouses of citizens and permanent residents can come easily.
Otherwise, Americans can come for 6 months and cannot work.
If you have -- or can claim -- the citizenship of a member state of the EU, the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland) or Switzerland you can live and work in the UK without a visa. If your ancestors came from any such country it may be worthwhile looking into your rights.

They get a tourist Visa for up to 6 months (but cannot do paid work in that time), they can apply for a visa extension then. Imigration from US is not as easy as you think. My dad is American and I have lots of American relatives, yet it wouldn't be much easier for them to get over here than it would for an Iranian (who I also know a few of, who actually came over quite simply when they had a lot of money).

First and foremost, an American that wants to immigrate into Britain needs a very serious mental defect, otherwise they wouldn't want to go!

All foreigners require a passport to visit the UK. Anyone wishing to be considered to stay here needs to apply and be considered on their merit. How typically arrogant and ignorant that an american would ask why it was necessary!
