Arabic and Farsi are completely unrelated languages. Arabic is a Semitic language in the Afro-Asiatic language family and is related to Hebrew, Ancient Egyptian, Hausa, Somali, Amharic, Akkadian, Aramaic, and about 200 languages of Africa. Farsi is an Indo-European language and is related to English, Hindi, Russian, Latin, and about 200 other languages of Europe and Asia. The Afro-Asiatic family originated in northeast Africa (Ethiopia probably). The Indo-European family originated in Ukraine.
EDIT: On the issue of alphabets. Yes, Arabic and Farsi share the same alphabet with some minor modifications. But so do Hungarian and English. An Arabic speaker reading Farsi would understand as much as an English speaker reading Hungarian. Let's demonstrate. Jo napot, kivanok, hogy van ma? Azt hiszem hogy nem ert mindent. Understand that? That's how much an Arab reading Farsi or an Iranian reading Arabic would understand.

In addition to all what has already been said, I'd like to make it simplir .... Think of it like English and French .... Most of the alphabet is used in both languages but French has some more. Also a Frenshman may be able to read english but wouldn't understand what he/she is reading!

if you are English or French . persion is like english and Arabic is like French in Arabic there is a lot of nouns feamale and male cases but in persion you are much free and you can find more phrase 'collocation. sentence in arabic has very specifice meaning but in persion has many aspect so that is why poem is so strong in persion and people have a lot of argument about idea of poetry in a poem
in persion you can make new words easily
pronounciation in persion is in mouth but arabic in throat
and in persion there is 4 more alphbet on strong from of franch (simble z) German(kh) Russia (r)
so people are more flexible to learn other language

The alphabets are almost the same, but there are4 more alphabets in Farsi, and also the grammar and words are different, although they have many words in common!
