It seems that lately I've been noticing that people have forgotten the little things; saying thank-you to someone holding a door for them, being considerate in public by keeping their children quiet and under control; things of that nature. I try my hardest to be kind and considerate, and to teach my children to do the same, but it's hard to justify when there are so many rude people out there who only seem to think about themselves. Am I wrong?

You are right. A lot of people thought their parents were to strict on them so they do not want to impose rules on their kids now.

They want to be friends with their children and friends don't teach rules, they just accept the person as they are...

In these peoples minds..

Well, manners are the first step in being nice and kind and treating others well. So when you lose these it is all down hill from then on.

Self centered and selfish.. Me for me and all for me and to heck with you. I want what I want so too bad for you... it makes me crazy.

I wonder, I hold the door for someone, they do not even bother to say thank you or nod their head or anything to acknowledge my doing so... am I mean to want to slam the freakin door in their face?

It was pouring outside and I was walking into the grocery store. This old man blew his horn at me from his warm dry caddy because he thought since he owned one I should stand out there in the rain so he could get to his spot without stopping.

I ran my cart into his inside the store.... not hard... and gave him a look... he almost said something... but turned away... grrrrrrr, but I felt better....

Thank you for teaching your kids manners..

God Bless...

Having looked at books on etiquette from over a hundred years ago, it actually seems like the same problems prevail. It's even possible that things have gotten better, if you can believe it. For instance, I've never had anyone spit on my clothing having used smokeless tobacco- and apparently this used to be a common problem!

I think it's easy to get all rosy glassed about the good old days, but I begin to think there's no such thing, and that people are people. All we can do is set a good example and hope for the best.

You're not wrong. People are desensitizing and therefore are much less kind than they used to be. As a whole people are getting mmore and more rude and mean and obnoxious. And care less and less about others around them.

the rude people out there make up the loud obnoxious minority
it's just that they are so irritating that these occurances stand out in your mind and they seem to happen more frequently than they actually do
if you take the time to acknowledge EVERY( and i mean every) person that doesn't bother you, you'll see what i mean

so many people abuse of others that its harder for anyone to try and help for we can't tell if we will get burned or taken for a ride, unfortunately that has been what makes people less kind-hearted.

No, you aren't wrong. I've seen the trend, too, and all we can do is perservere and keep being kind-hearted and courteous to others.
