It comes from Korea......Not sure how to describe it, but it is Chinese cabbage which has been set to ferment. They add red chili, and various other ingredients. Its a acquired taste....The reason it has a strong smell is because of the fermented cabbage....

Kimchee is salted and fermented cabbage. Cabbage has a rather noxious oder when fresh. When buried in the ground for a couple months it really gets ripe.

It's pickled spicy korean Cabbage. Pickled, stinky. Cabbage, Stinky. Double stinky, double nasty. My wife loves it, I can't stand it.

Or maybe its fermented, eitherway, double stinky.
