I like the quote, but can't remember who coined it. Sounds like something Winston Churchill would say. Anyway, I believe there's a lot of truth to that. We are our true selves when we think we're alone. It takes away conformist tendencies and allows our true, suppressed behavior to surface. Many liberals see values, character and morals as relative. While I guage things relative to the circumstances, I do realize there are absolutes. I think character, values and morals in any given society is a reflection of what is deemed suitable by the majority of people who make up that society. Some people use the argument, "well, in this country or society this is acceptable." That may be the case, but as a function of my society I'm only concerned with our own norms. Many liberals cast doubt upon something by applying 'what ifs,' and intellectualizing something into non-existence. Still, character is driven by thoughts and thoughts provoke actions. The majority of people will agree that morals are a example of conduct, that when followed, will produce the most peaceful and best functioning society.
