We didn't have a lot of money when I was growing up, but we had a lot of books.
So, reading. Reading by themselves. Reading to each other. Teaching each other to read. Acting out the stories they read, using old sheets or costumes from the thrift store.
We baked. Learned to make jam out of the plums that grew wild down the way. Baked apple pies from our apples in the back yard. Picked blackberries and made cobblers.
We made our own clothes - a school clothing budget can go a long, long way by sewing.
