From my personal experience, Ambien works very well as a sleep aid, but there are serious risks involved (dependency and/or rebound insomnia). Having experienced terrible withdrawal symptoms from antidepressants, I learned to avoid controlled substances whenever possible. That's why I'd rather stick with something safer, such as Rozerem, also a prescription sleep aid (but with no risk of dependency), or something over-the-counter, like valerian extracts, melatonin tablets, or even chamomile tea.
I do admit that I was very happy with Ambien while taking it. It always helped me fall asleep rather quickly, and I woke up refreshed. But after using Ambien for a week or two, I couldn't fall asleep without it. That was terrible, and I realized that I had to stop. Now I'm using Rozerem, which doesn't work as well but is supposed to be entirely safe in regards to dependency.

It is a strong medicine and can have serious side effects but I have been taking it for 5 years and it is a Godsend to me. If something less powerful, like Tylenol PM will let you get a good and full nights sleep for you, then that is what you should take.
I did have problems at first with grogginess but that that is no longer a problem.
It is common to have memory problems while you are taking it, especially if you get up during the night you might not remember what you did. I would sometimes go to the kitchen and found food out that I had put away before I went to bed. Since I live alone, I must have gotten hungry during the night and never remembered I got up.
You must have Ambien prescribed by a doctor, you can not just go out and buy it. I have not experienced any problems with addiction from it. I never take too much, only what is prescribed.
If your doctor prescribes 1 per night, your pharmacist will only give you enough to take 1 per night. I believe the person who said her b/f abused it but i don't understand why a person would do that. If 1 helps you sleep for 8 hours, why would a person take 2?

I administer it alot, and it's highly addictive, whether people like to believe that or not. I know of some people who have fallen over standing upright from it, or being so out of it if they get up in the middle of the night they fall. There are other alternatives which are not controlled like Ambien and ones which do not cause dependence. I'd look into those first.

I've taken it on occassion. it definitely knocked me out quicker, but i would usually wake up after about 4 or 5 hours and be unable to go back to sleep. Didn't have any problems with grogginess though, or other side effects for that matter. ...and i don't take it any more, so no, i dont take it too much.
As far as other things working better, i prefer Tylenol PM. That puts me down and keeps me there for 8 hours. Have to take it early though, as you WILL be sleepy for a full 8-10 hours.
