Don't downgrade to Windows ME because you're asking for trouble.
Windows ME was a total flop. That's why they came out with Windows XP so quickly.
If you are going to change your operating system. Then either go to Windows 2000 or Linspire which is based on Linux.
Right now there are two different Operating Systems they are currently developing which are looking very interesting.
One is called SkyOS and the other is called ReactOS.
SkyOS is based kind of on Linux.
As for the React OS. It is a Windows NT compatible operating system.
For More info, visit:

To look over all the current operating systems, then visit:

P.S.
If you are going to install Windows 2000, you don't have to format your hard drive or anything else.
All you have to do is copy the Windows 2000 CD to your hard drive. Get a boot floppy to boot into DOS. Go to the directory where the Windows 2000 CD is copied to. Type setup.exe and Windows 2000 will totally uninstall Windows XP from your system.
After it uninstalls Windows XP, it will install Windows 2000 and keep most of your settings.

Since Windows ME is no longer supported by Microsoft, why not go for Windows 2000 Professional. You would have to totally uninstall XP before installling any other Operating System. Good luck with whatever OS you choose.

Going to ME would be going backwards. You would be better off to go back to SE. If you have XP home on a small system, SE is still a great way to go for gamers. However, 2k and XP pro are also an option. XP home for all it's problems won't be around that much longer any way, so you may just be stuck with it till maybe spring, then Vista will be the way to go.
What kind of problem are you having with XP? If you set up an account (free) with tech republic, they have a large archive of fixes and tweaks for XP home.

Before installing another Operating System (OS), I suggest that you completely wipe your hard drive clean and then perform a clean install of whatever OS you want. Doing this will ensure that all sensitive information you may have had on the hard drive is erased and that there won't be any conflict between the old OS and the new one. I suggest downloading and installing Morgud's Erasure Suite (MES) for free at http://www.morgud.com/reviews/software/MES.asp.

You could always switch to Linux, but most people are going to have significant learning curve with that OS. What specifically are you having problems with on XP? I think it's the most stable Microsoft operating system yet. (Yeah, you still have the security problems, but Microsoft is a big target.)
