Try to buy a rebuilt one with warranty.
Buying a used one is risky,it may have the same problem as the one you are replacing!

I wouldn't change the transmission in such an old car. It happened the same to my old 12 years old Corsica and the repair was more expensive than the car was worth. I bought a Pontiac and they gave me 100 buck for the Chevy for parts.

I would not bother getting a new one. It would cost to much money for the transmission and to get a mechanic to switch it out. I would sell what you have and use it as a down payment on another vehicle.
