Either one can prescribe antidepressants. I guess it comes down to which one you are more comfortable talking to.

I would talk to both of them. Your therapist can't prescribe medication but a good therapist is aware of medication options and knows more about your depression than a family doctor has time to discover about you. The therapist will most likely recommend either to ask your family doctor for medicine or will refer you to a psychiatrist. Your doctor can prescibe the drugs him or herself but still may refer you to a psychiatrist. In a best case scenario, your doctor can prescribe meds but have contact with your therapist to see if you are improving.

First of all I am sorry to hear that you are depressed. Everyone is one time or another in their lifetime. You are perfectly normal and very smart to want to get some help. I find it to be true that it is always a good idea to talk with your doctor about how you are feeling. In alot of cases you have to be referred to a thearpist by a doctor before you get medication. Although talking with both a doctor and a therapist is a excellent choice. If you are depressed it is a great idea to get some help now. Why suffer anymore. These things can be helped. I hope you have some better days. Chin up and smile!!

I would suggest seeing your regular doctor if you feel comfortable talking to him/her about it. They can then either prescribe medication for the depression or refer you to a psychiatrist and therapist to help ease you out of your depression. A therapist will help with depression but usually they cannot prescribe medication in most states unless they are also liscensed as a medical doctor.

Your therapist must be a psychiatrist (usually has an M.D. and Ph.D) or a licensed medical doctor to prescribe medication. If you are already seeing a psychiatrist, talk to him or her about it. If you are not, see your family doctor. Your family doctor will be able to refer you to someone. Some family doctors also have experience with emotional difficulties, so he or she may be able to recommend a treatment themselves that best suits your individual needs.

It's best to talk about it with your therapist, because they know you better mentally speaking and what your mental needs are, where as your doctor knows what you need for your body. So talk to your therapist about it.

I would say your therapist, but you really could talk to either one. They could both connect you to a psychiatrist, but I think your therapist would be more likely to help you figure out exactly what is causing your problems, recommend a psychiatrist and share your records with him/her.
