Did anyone catch the special on TLC about Camp 9/11? I am in the middle of a DVR viewing of the show and already I want to get involved with this project.

I work with troubled teens in a therapeutic wilderness camp setting in Texas. I deal with kids and their emotional issues all the time. I would be honored to volunteer at one of the camps and I'm sure I'm not the only one, lots of people on my staff would volunteer their time to counsel camp there.

Trouble is, I am having trouble finding out how to get in touch with the people who run the camps. Does anyone know where to start?

One thing that is pulling meinto this idea is that I was in NJ working as a nanny at the time. The family I worked for worked in Hoboken right across the river from downtown Manhattan (we lived in Hunterdon Co, central NJ). The dad I worked for saw the second plane hit. So I actually have some indirect experience dealing with this particular event, as well as experience with general grief and other emotional issues with kids.

Could be you're having trouble getting in touch with them
because that is not the way God wants you to go. I'm having the
same trouble, because I think he wants me to use my entertainment skills, rather than intellectual outreach.
From the sound of your nickname. Try using your musical talent to reach out. Might even go national, (music television). Get the teens to help you write the words. (Thier concerns for today). That's what I'm trying to do with a Hip Hop for Jesus I'm working on.

I do animal rescue. When Katrina hit, everyone wanted to adopt a katrina pet. It was all in vogue amoung the upper classes. People that couldn't drive 10 miles to see one of our dogs would fly across the state to adopt a Katrina pet. Or, at least that is what they told us. Whether they managed to actually get their hands on one of these coveted animals remains a mystery. There is so many local pets to rescue but they were ignored. We found it disgusting.

People are probably lining up to help at these camps. They don't need you. They are being swamped with calls. But I am sure there are places in the local community that are desperate.

There are some web sites that you should check out. They are listed as national service sites. AmeriCorps, VISTA Volunteers and more. Just type into google and go. Thanks for being a volunteer!
