My son is at the max weight and height for his convertible car seat (40in tall and 40lbs), but not quite 4yrs old. He is happy in his car seat, and I would personally prefer him to stay in the car seat for added safety. However, I don't want to put him in danger by keeping him in a car seat that he has surpassed the maximum weight and height restrictions. Can he still benefit from the added protection of his car seat, or is it time to use a booster seat?

my daughter just explained it to me the other day. Our grandson is not 40 pounds yet so he is staying in his car seat he has to stay there until he is 40 pounds. But after that he is going in his booster seat until he is 85 pounds again. Age has nothing to do with it. It depends on the weight

You have to read the manual. See what the max limit is. If its too small then move to a booster seat. They are about 20 at walmart. In texas you have to be at least 5 to go without a booster seat. The safekids coalition would like everyone to stay in a seat till about 8 or until his legs bend comfortably over the edge and the belt strap didnt go over his stomach, but instead over the hips but below the waste( you can achieve that with a booster). If you look up SafeKids on the computer you can find a local firestation or hospital that does car seat checks. Get a highback if your car doesnt have a head rest.

maximum carseats only carry infants as much as 40 5 pounds. Booster seats are for infants 4 and older and over 40 5 pounds. There are truthfully 2 forms of booster seats. There are ones that place the newborn greater in the seat to apply the seatbelt, and ones with a extreme returned and a 5 element harness (they look very very resembling a usual carseat). If the seat you have is weighted for as much as a hundred pounds. it somewhat is consistent with danger a sort of booster seat and could be secure for her to apply till she is age 8 or 4 foot 9 inches (that's the cautioned secure practices harness top in the state I stay in).

If he is bigger and taller than the seat requires, get him a booster seat. You could do more damage than good by not buying a new one. If you two really want him to stay in his seat, take him to the fire department and they could probably tell you if he needs a new one. But by and by, he's going to have to get a new one soon anyways, so just make a fun day out of it, and let him pick out a new seat. He might have a fun fun time with mom picking out a new cool big boy seat! (My son is also almost 4--I can totally relate!)

My personal belief is get a booster seat. The car seat is o longer effective past its tested capacity. It is the reason it stated a max weight and height

It can actually be more dangerous for you to leave him in his present car seat, the booster seat is designed to give your child the protection that he needs in case of an accident. However if you are worried about the amount of protection that he will receive there are plenty of convertible car seats the go up to 100lbs and 65in.

Find out what the laws are in your state. In California it is 6years old OR 60 pounds.

There is evidence that kids are safer in a booster until they are 4foot 9 inches.

I would move him into a booster for the next few years. Besides a booster will raise him high enough so he can continue to look out of the windows too.

Start using a booster seat.

A booster seat would be a good choice especially if you dont' want a ticket. My daughter just recently switched and she loves hers. They have more room to move and they can get in/out by themselves almost. (Depending on the vechicle) But to be on the complete safe side yes I would use a booster.

Compromise... get a car seat/booster that goes up to 70 pounds. They still have the added safety of a carseat, but are rated for larger children. We have one made by Cosco that goes to 70 pounds that my oldest daughter uses (she is 7, but only weighs 53 pounds).
