It says that women should cover their chest and their figure when they go out.
Men too should not wear figure hugging clothes and should be modest. They are not supposed to wear silk or gold either.
Other than that, Muslims can choose how to dress.

There are no real concrete reason as to why muslim must be covered. but one must understand that rules and regulations in religion are imposed from time to time so as to be able to help the community.

People living in middle east are subjected to huge amount of dust and sand storms. At the same time, during summer, they are faced with temperature soaring as high as 45 to 52 degrees. This extream hot weather therefore causes people to cover up to prevent unnecessary sun burn which is painful. at the same time, the veil is to prevent the sand from affecting their face and eyes.

As time goes by, the muslim community remains to be a main dominant in middle east wherelese the christian moves towards europe. Europe as you are aware are much cooler and therefore in their community dressing do not require such coverings.

One must remember that different religion imposes different customs according to their head at different times. The dominance of Muslim will still be in middle east and therefore their influence on the type of costume and clothing is therefore still unchanged.

At the same time, one must understand that unlike the christian which the bible do changes in their wordings from time to time as noted by Guniness Book of world record as the book with the most changes. For eg. the muslim allows people to go off fasting when they are travelling. One can understand the danger of not eating during travelling when you have to travel on a camel or horse will cause a person to faint and break his back

on the contrast, in the comfort of today's world, you will find that more muslim will travel during fasting as the moment they pass the required distance, they are eating non stop in the plane.

dressing styles and functions are much of the needs rather than just for pure fashion during the olden days. for eg. the rank of an officer in the government will dress in certain style. dressing not to the grade can become a punishable affair. a slave in egypt is not allowed to wear sandals. and if you see stone sculpure of eygpt where their toes are apart is an indication of their class status.

An unveiled woman in those days are considered to be a woman of ill repute and likewise for a muslim woman who even collects monies for doing the washing of another man or family is consider no higher in rank to a prostitute. (which accounts for why a muslim man can have 4 wives as most of their husbands died in the crusades)

taking us back in time to today's world, you will find that in singapore and malaysia or even in indonesia, there are no real requirements that all muslim must be covered up especially for woman. this is because in our weather, due to the humidity and heat, the perspiration caused by the covering can make a person rather stinky. hence it become a subjective matter for individual.

But nevertheless, the traditional muslim clothings has still to be worn when they are going to the mosque. and you will notice that in the christian they do put on the ropes as well and as for the monks, they are too in the traditional clothing.

so one must notice that wearing traditional clothing for religious practice has somewhat becomes a norm and it acts as a reminder of our master so that one can continue to pursue its spiritual practice.
