Because you need to change the tampon regularly to avoid Toxic Shock Syndrome-- and you may not be up to that after surgery. Its one less thing for the surgical team to worry about.
I agree with you though, I hate pads too.

Good luck tomorrow-- hope it all goes well!

I believe the basic reason that they do not wanting you to use a tampon is that when you come out of surgery you might not be in a position to tend to it if it is needed. Remember, you shouldn't wear tampons for more than a couple hours or so. Toxic Shock Syndrome if a factor, as well. The odds of getting Toxic Shock are higher following surgery.

You didn't say what kind of minor surgery you were having, but it is possible that one of the procedures might interfere with the tampon, and that could also be a problem.

i think it's just easier for the surgeons. When you get to the hospital, they will probably also ask you to wear a pair of underwear with a pad in it. Part of it is formality and perhaps another aspect is safety. In terms of the latter, consider, for example, the part of your body that is being operated on. Will it interfere with surgery?? You may forget to take the tampon out after surgery. You'll be tired and will need to recover. Leaving a tampon in for more than 8 hours can be hazardous. It's simply for these types of reasons that you've been asked to wear a pad.

If they should have to insert a catheter in your bladder, the tampon could be a problem as it presses on your bladder. The others also right about toxic shock syndrome. You might be too groggy after surgery to remember the tampon and forget to take it out and would your really want the doctor or nurse to have to pull it out? Unfortunately, when we go in for surgery, we don't get to make the rules. When I was a kid, I got my tonsils out and they wouldn't let me wear underwear in bed, and I hated that!

same reason they ask you to take off all your clothes and jewelry...I mean unless u having ear surgery...why on earth does it matter whether u have ear rings in? it is just a safety rule they do just in case things don't go so well...they want everything off ya and out of their way..and too if they put you to sleep they will have to put in a catheter and the tampon will only be in their way u..... lucky if they give ya one of those gowns that have your a ss hanging out of em...it's either for safety measure or they want to be in control...I think both!

Toxic Shock Syndrome. They don't won't you to die or have serious complications. Eliminating any potential causes includes tampons I'm afraid.

I have no clue. But that is interesting....Why didn't you ask when you had the opportunity? I suggest going in with tampon in place, and a pad and panties handy. Ask before they take you back and explain your discomfort.

The reason is they have to keep emptying your bladder during surgery.
