He is continuously ridaculed about things (some of which are pretty bad but supposively not true... drugs/drinkin & drivin/skimping on hours and is quite over weight. He is a genuine nice guy but is having a hard time with our MIDDLE to LOW economic class community. I really do feel for him. Hard lines to stay between in a town where one neighbor is the town drunk/druggy and the other could be your mayor. Jerry Springer, you hear this???

Start speaking at the local school to the kids. Be seen walking the streets of the town..being friendly. Being seen doing things..not just sitting around drinking coffee or eating. Lots of smiling and small talk. Start a new program for the local kids. Just some suggestions..hope they help!

It might be that he is was not trained very well (if at all) for the position he is working. Police officers have to relate to all members of the community and there's a great deal of stress on them. And maybe even more in a small town where everyone knows each other and town politics is everywhere. Lack of training and access to updated, ongoing training, and being with other trained officers can wear an officer down to the point that his health declines, drinking can become an issue, family problems, etc. The training subject presumes the small town image that you give - as if maybe officers are selected on a budget and the budget does not include academy training.

Regardless of the town's size, 800 or 8 million, the officer is responsible for enforcing the laws and ordinances.

If he is so thin-skinned that rumors and talk about him are getting to him, he's in the wrong business.

He needs to step up and do his job, treating everyone the same, whether it's the town drunk or the town mayor. Equal under the law should be his guide.

I think he should just go out and do his job. Not try to impress people. my step father was a cop in a small town and people hated him. I could see why he tried to be a super cop and thought because he was a cop everyone should respect him. He was more like barney pfife from andy griffith show to me.

A small town cop should be fair and not go out thinking he is better than everyone else, just be a good guy and do not break the laws he is trying to enforce. I tell you I used to have arguments with all the officers in our town cause they would give people tickets for speeding, but they were worse about it than anyone else. They thought just cause they had a badge and enforced the law that they didn't apply to them!

Do positive things for the community, organizing a bike rally for kids, RAD and DARE classes, self defense for women, mace or firearms training. Treat all equally and fairly. Try to lose a little weight will help self esteem too.

It takes a lot tobe a police officer. This guy just needs to be true to himself and his job and not worry what others think. As long as he hasn't done anything wrong he shouldn't worry. It may take time. He has to get people to trust him. People need to realize that cops aren't out to get them, they are there to protect them and others. It's the people who have to worry about what they are doing not him.

Avoid drugs, liquor and bad driving,
It is the only way to have a good image other than looking neat with the uniform on.

maybe get more citizens to participate in police work, put on community class on safety, have a night out party in the streets with police visiting them to do safety info etc.

How about theft prevention classes, or classes on self defense for women (as to how to protect yourself from mugs and rapists).
