Affordable 'panchakarma' centre set up

NEW DELHI, OCT. 4.

Aimed at bringing the highly popular ``Panchkarma'' system of medical treatment from Kerala at an affordable rate to people in the Capital, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has opened the first hospital of its kind in this metropolis.

Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 48 lakhs, the eight-bed Golvarkar Panchkarma Ayurvedic Hospital at Prashant Vihar in North-West Delhi provides almost all types of treatment and cures under this ancient ayurvedic system, which has recently been popularised by the Arya Vaidyasala of Kottakal in Kerala.

``The hospital equipped with all the latest facilities in the field will be opened to the public this month,'' said the Municipal Commissioner, Mr. S.P. Aggarwal, at a press conference here today. At present there are four Panchkarma Centres in the Capital functional from Moolchand Hospital, Holi Family Hospital, Maharishi Ayurveda Hospital and the Arya Vaidyashala Hospital at Karkardooma, he said.

``Panchkarma treatment -- which is becoming popular -- at all these centres is beyond the scope of the common man as it is too costly. But, at the MCD hospital the treatment would be at an affordable rate. We are committed to providing benefit of the panchkarma system of medical treatment to people who cannot afford exorbitant cost of private treatment,'' Mr. Aggarwal said. ``This is the first such hospital in Delhi by a civic body. Depending on the response, more such hospitals will be opened up in the future,'' he added.

A major feature of this hospital is the herbal garden in its campus spread over 1.5 acres. As many as 3,310 medicinal plants and shrubs of more than 60 varieties have been planted here including ``Gawar Patha'', ``Kala Vasa'', ``Heeng'', ``Sita Ashok'', and ``Vasa''.

``Medicines prepared from these plants will be used to cure the patients by Panchkarma. Adequate arrangements for irrigation of plants have also been made by setting up a tube-well and laying of water pipeline. A five feet deep pond has also been developed in the herbal garden where different species of lotus will be planted,'' Mr. Aggarwal said.

The hospital will be managed by MCD's Indigenous System of Medicine Department, which is running two ayurvedic hospitals and 102 dispensaries. The hospital has a strength of four physicians and four massagers all trained in Kerala.

According to Mr. Aggarwal, besides the Panchkarma treatment, the hospital will also provide yoga and naturopathy facilities. Two yoga teachers have been appointed. ``We are making all out efforts to open such hospitals in other areas also so as to enable the citizens to avail benefit of the ancient systems of treatment of diseases,'' he said.
