It's called an IVC filter, or inferior vena cava filter. It is inserted through a very small incision until it reach the inferior vena cava which is the main vein that brings blood back to the heart. It is then opened (like an umbrella) so that it may trap any pieces of a clot that could potentially lodge itself into the heart or lungs. This is to prevent a heart attack or pulmonary embolism (or another stroke). I have never heard of the term "screen," but the IVC filter is often called by it's trademark name the Greenfield filter. It is a very minor procedure, usually done under twilight sedation.

It sounds like your sister had a very serious blood clot, and it broke free in her blood stream. This can cause stroke, or even death. One of the more common places for dangerous clots to form are the legs, perhaps you have heard of DVT or deep vein thrombosis. This condition can be fatal if again a piece of the clot breaks free and enters the lungs. or heart, or the brain. The umbrella is actually a small filter that is inserted into a vein where the clot is believed to have originated. Its job it to catch the piece of clot that breaks off before it can go any further and cause strokes, or death. The technology of these filters has improved over the years and now they can be removed where in the past they could not. I wish your sister all the best.

It must be some kind of filter to prevent another clot traveling to the brain. We see a lot of people on my floor with filters. I work on an acute rehabilitation unit. It is usually placed in a large vessel in the groin area.

I don't know the procedure, but my brother had one put in after his leg was amputated and he started developing clots. He is still alive and that was in 1999, so I guess it works.
