i had a Pit Bull, a Rottweiler and now a mini Chihuahua and I believe the Mini Chihuahua is the most work of all.
She wants more attention
she is all up on me all day and night.
She may be cheaper on food but she is more responsibility and more work as the big dogs.
But..... she is a lot easier to train.
She takes it harder when i leave her home alone or try leaving her with Friends.
I am not sure what you mean by work so i give you all i know.

well, it all depends on the type of dog that is is...all dogs are a hand full but many of them do not require the grooming or attentiveness as others.... The more you work with any dog, the better dog you will have...I spend about 2 hours a day in 30 minute intervels working with my dog and playing with her and grooming her..She is small and has very long hair that needs brushed and combed twice daily or more...She is a dog that needs constant attention..But I like that...She is a Maltese... But it may be the same with a big dog..... it just depends mostly on what kind of dog you want ..... but just make sure you have plenty of time to dedicate each and everyday to your dog.... Best Of Luck

Less poop. But, toy breeds are social dogs for the most part. It can be exhausting keeping up with their demands for attention and love. But, it's so worth it if you have the time.

Toy dogs are also prone to very specific illnesses that are incredibly expensive and not incredibly rare. From luxating patellas ($1000+ fix), to bad teeth ($100+ a year to get them cleaned), to eye issues (could lead to blindness or expensive surgeries), to leg breaks (could easily be $1000+). The puppies are far more fragile until they are well over a year and can be extremely difficult to housebreak. Toy dogs are NEVER recommended to go to homes with small children.

Some small dogs also have 'small dog syndrome', meaning they can be agressive and difficult to train.

Your best bet will be to go to the breed club page of any of the breeds you are considering. Find out what kind of personality they have. A reputable breed club tells it like it is, meaning they don't want the dog to go to someone who isn't prepared. I'll also link to ways to recognize a reputable breeder. This way you'll be less likely to get into genetic issues with the dog.

Good luck to you! : )

smaller dog = smaller bladder and digestive tract= very frequent bathroom breaks, if you work full time you dog isnt going to hold his waste in for 9 hours until you get home. puppies esp. need to be taken out every 1 to 2 hours so they can be properly potty trained and programmed that "this is where i pee/poo" also small dogs usually have alot of hair which has to be cared for, if you want a breed that grows long hair you have to have enough time to BRUSH it or your dog will have to be shaved down every 4-6 weeks (which takes away the point of having a long haired dog) think of it this way if you dont brush your hair for a few it gets really tangled, now imagine that hair being all over your body so when you run around its all constantly being rubbed and tangled up even more. if you are dead set on a small dog i would strongly recommend adopting a 1 year old or older. and probably a short hair unless you are going to thoroughly brush out the tangles every day. millions of dogs need homes and thousands are put down every day due to lack of space and funding, many are put down within 30 minutes of entering a shelter, unless it is young and cute, what they call "adoptable" maybe try a medium sized 20-30 lb mix breed. terriers tend to have alot of energy and need to release that energy or they get behavioral problems. i would find your local rescue groups and just go see their animals and maybe you will connect with one. petfinder.com is a great site that will show you all the rescue groups in your area. good luck!!

Absolutely not. The smaller the dog, the more little bites you have to pay for when people visit and end up at the hospital.
The personality of the dog is everything (and the dog food costs and the type of hair).
Really small dogs are just as much work as big dogs, they still go to the bathroom just as often, still need to be cared for daily and exercised. If you are worried about how much trouble a dog is, then get a cat.

Well, the smaller the dog, the smaller the poop. Plus it's easier to give a small dog a bath and cheaper to feed them.

Small dogs can sometimes be hard to housebreak, but hey less poop and pee to clean up. I would much rather clean up after a chihuahua than a Saint Bernard. It costs less to feed them. Easier to groom. I love my chihuahuas and they are much less work than a big dog.

To auntiegray who says, small dogs bite more and you have to pay a lot of other people's medical bills because of the dog bites!! So wrong!!! I have never had one of my chihuahuas bite anyone, never had to pay a doctor bill because of a dog bite. And I have never heard of a case where a Chihuahua killed anybody!!!!!!

not necessarily. it all depends how you train them. the bigger the dog obviously the more the you know. some dogs shed like crazy regardless of size! a dog that does not shed, isn't prone to many illnesses, & is well trained would be a piece of cake to own. but my dogs, at least my very little shih tzu (sierra), was never trained very well. she has accidents all over the house, not because she can't hold it, but because she hasn't been taught very well.. good luck!

i got 2 chihuahuas lots o work. but can just put pads on the ground inside and teach them to be potty trained. still need to walk them for the exercise. but good for a condo. they need lots of attention, i should know I'm home all day

Best to have hardhood floors with area rug with the pee/poop pads on the rugs, the pads are cheapest at walmart. they bark ALOT! at almost anything .
