Tell him you have a personal emergency that is private and need the day off. Provided that this is not common for you and there is no important meeting or project that day, and you have the time off available, there should not be a problem.
Don't lie about bodily injury, illness, or family death. These lies will catch up with you, and they are the reason employers don't always trust an employee that calls in to miss work for these reasons legitimately.

You could say you need to go to a funeral or that some friends/relatives who live in another state/country are coming for a visit and you would like the day off so you can spend time with them and show them around etc. Or you could say that there is a family emergency and if they ask about it just say you don't want to discuss it because it's personal.

Sprained ankle, strained leg or arm. Your personal reason.
No fuel in the car, the car was stolen, no bus fare. You don't have the Patience to wait for the bus, nor to call a taxi. You're afraid to ask a neighbor to drive you. You have company, and feel you have to be with them. You have a strained hand. You don't have any clothes in the closet. All four tires of the car, are flat or missing. You've found another job. You pick, which one to use.

#1 Freak snowstorm, snow as high as your front door, and you don't have a snow shovel ! (I've used this one...it worked!)
#2 Your street's old sewer pipes finally exploded and the contents of your home have all been ruined, including the outfit you were planning to wear to work the next day ! (Don't forget to call from your cellphone, because your house's line wasn't working, don't forget to unplug your house phone in case work tries to call your bluff )
#3 You spent all night at the emergency vet with your dog/cat/bird, so you didn't get a wink of sleep and now because you were both so traumatized, you need to stay home and monitor your pet's recovery.
#4 You went out for a bikeride last night and it was dark and you ran into a big pile of soil in front of your neighbours house, and the bike stopped moving , but you were shot forward, and your p***y ran straight into your crossbar at full speed, so now you can't walk because you have a swollen p***y. (This one REALLY happened to me , and it bought me one day off, and besides , are they gonna ask to see proof ?)

Arrested? lol Went out of state and couldn't get back in time cuz my car broke down? Court? Or you can always say that it is a personal reason - they shouldn't ask you or try to get all up in your business.

Can't you just be honest and just tell your boss you need a day off for a personal reason? if your attendance is good, they would probably say yes. Better than fibbing.
