That's almost a quarter of a million miles per minute. Whoa.

4000 miles per second -- the speed of projectiles fired from a "Metal Storm" weapon. This is radically heavy firepower.

Anyone else watching Discovery tonight? "Future Weapons" ???

That's why I asked. I swear I heard miles, not feet. 4000fps is not so remarkable in today's weaponry. I've fired rounds that had muzzle velocities over 3000fps (accelerator rounds.) I'm going to have to look this one up.

With the Metal Storm, rounds per minute is only limited by the number of tubes in a system. But, maybe it was rounds per minute. Anyway, considering all aspects of the Metal Storm, it's still radical.

Has to be rounds per second.

High pressure Mach 5 rounds appear to be the fastest rounds Metal Storm has tested, and not without problems in blow by and barrel wear.

Anyway, the whole three hours of "Future Weapons" is repeating now (from 2300EDT to 0200 EDT).

This stuff is amazing, and it's both very cool and very heavy.

I reckone points will go the most informative answer or best discussion, but no copy-pastes, please. Links, okay. But please no long copy-pastes.

here's a link to the company making Metal Storm: http://www.metalstorm.com/

It could be "meters" per second..but I doubt that too..M16 rifle muzzle velocity (MV) is 991 metres per sec..and that is "fast". An average machine gun would have MV around 750mps.

From memory a "minigun" as used in numerous Arnie movies has a cyclic rate (CR) of around 10-12000 rounds per min (RPM), a "Mac 10 sub machine gun, has a v high CR for single barreled weapon at around 1000 rpm, so without really knowing what type of weapon "metalstorm" is...my guess would be that the figure 4000, would most prob refer to CR, not MV. Now Im going to look at the link...to see if Im right? Yes..very interesting.

If u think thats cool..google up a missile protection system called "goalkeeper"

I think that was rounds per second. They use close to the same size charge as regular ammunition so would go same speed as regular gun.but since it's fired through a electrical pulse and there is no moving parts they can fire super fast.
One gun based on same design was in MAXIM magazine that can do 1mil rounds a minute.

Yeah I watched the thing I thought was the coolest is the gun with the LCD screen where you can actually bend it and have the capability to look around a corner with out putting yourself in harms way. I dont know why the Army doesnt already have these in the fields. They are already being used throughout the US for police agencies and SWAT teams.

Firearms velocity is measured in Feet per second, not miles.
The rate of fire is measured in rounds per minute.
