We have a 7 month old Shih Tzu, who we got almost 1 1/2 months ago, however as long as we have had him we have been having a problem of pottying in the house. He will go out when DH takes him at 10pm, comes in and goes to bed until 7 or 730 am without going out. Then my husband takes him to the basement with him until noon and he might go out once during that time.

The problem is during that time he is closed in a smaller office with my husband, but when he comes up stairs he is in the living room and we take him out every hour or so and he still pees on the floor. He goes when he is outside too. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to get him to go outside all the time and do it all at once. My friends tell me he should be able to hold it for at least 3 hours and he does not wait longer then a hour or so, but it only happens during the day. Thanks

The dog is potty trained to an extent. Since he is peeing in the house he is not completely. He is neutered and has been since a baby because of a hernia. He will potty outside and often times we sit with him for 10 to 20 minutes outside. I think I answered all the previous responses. My only question with the kidney infection would be that he holds it all night and this is happening outside the crate. Thanks for any assistance

Well, your dog should be crate trained for now. He should be taken out for excercise regularly on a schedule. And make sure your dog isn't taken out breifly then hauled back in the house. A lot of people with a new dog will take the dog out for just a few minutes until he/she "does his business" and then haul him back inside. The dog needs excercise and time outside.

1) I have 2 shih tzu and the most interesting thing about a 7 mth old is the lack of confidence in many things.

2) in the pet shop they sell some spray musk which you should spray on the news paper and it will train them

all puppies have a habit of shitting and peeing in fact about 5 to 15 minutes after their meal. Hence, after their meal, what you should do is put him in the toilet with newspaper and lock him out and do not let him out until he has done his business.

after 1 month, he should be paper trained.

Is he neutered? At 7 months old he is probably starting to "feel his oats" and he may be experiencing the need to "mark his territory" if he is not neutered. I would suggest neutering him if you have not already done so.

He might have a bladder infection. You probably should call a vet and ask them as well, or set up a check-up for him. Perhaps he just drinks alot, or, he's marking his territory.

Is he toilet-trained in the first place? If not, you might want to try the newspaper method first...
