He decided this morning that he wants a race car cake. I have no idea how to decorate a cake to look like a race car. All help, even if only to tell me where to look will be appreciated. Oh, his birthday is the end of August!

If you are planning on fixing the cake your self you can check with the craft shops like Hobby Lobby etc. they have an section for cake decorating they do have a cake pan that is shaped like a car but in order to purchase all the things you will need if this is the only one your making. Hate to say it but go to walmart they will fix the cake there and will end up costing about the same unless that is something u are getting into.cause by the time you buy the pan $6-$10, then cake boards, food coloring and etc . you will spend more and lot of time lol. But for a simple one make a square cake draw a track on top oblong one like at the races go get some of the matchbox cars and set them on the track not only does he get the cake but the cars are part of his gifts lol you can buy icing already made in were the cake mix is and can buy the tubes of different colors so you don't have to mix it. Hope this helps some.

If you can make it in the shape of a race car, you can make a sheet cake, and get some hot wheels, decorate the top of the cake as usual and make the surface smooth. Then with icing and food coloring make a road coarse and use the hot wheels, and other items found on the road. Signs, etc.

Go to a big craft store, there are some great cake decorating books there. When my kids were little I had one and most of the cakes were made from normal ordinary cake pans. Just had to cut and paste (with icing).
I made robots, butterflies, dump trucks, duck, mickey & minnie mouse. I can't remember the name of the book right now. When I get home I'll see if I can find it and edit the name in. It's a great book every mom should have one.

If you don't want to pay $20 to have the grocery store make it (Publix has very tasty cakes), then, you may want to consider decorating the cake look like a racetrack and putting a couple hot wheels racecars on it. This will also give him a couple toys to play with for years to come.

if u think its too much to maybe u can just buy some hot wheel or something and put those on the cake. its a quick and easy thing to do. other than that u can try to find a pan shaped like a car and then us icing to put colour and details on it.
