He is not aggressive with our guest, he just barks. We have scolded him and hushed him but it doesn't seem to work. If he does quiet down after we scold him, sometimes he will do little quiet barks under his breath like a bratty child!

Instead of scolding him, discipline him like a boss dog would discipline him, with a sharp bark (command from you). Some people succeed with a sharp loud hiss. Don't talk to your bad dog like it is a bad human. Dogs are different than humans.

I have a barker also. I use a sharp "NO". And I start before my guest enters. I get inbetween my guest and dog and control my dog, maybe giving him a little nudge with my foot to keep him in position. Sometimes I will roll him over onto his back (submission position), forcing him to submit to my guest's presents. I ask my guest to ignor my dog until he (my dog) behaves.

I like the TV program "The Dog Whisperer". It is both entertaining and educational. The host shows us how we should lead and how to get the dog to follow our lead so that both of us are happy.

Stop people coming over lol or shoot the dog ... just kidding. The dog is showing who is boss in HIS territory. You need to be the Alpha dog. Admonish the dog when it barks and remove it from the situation till the visitor has gone. continue to do this until it learns. This will take about two weeks sometimes a little longer .... or you can contact a dog whisperer.

He's actually being rather normal. A large part of it is teritorialism. He's making sure they know that they are in HIS space. Socializing him more both inside and OUTSIDE of his home can help.

There is also a "no bark" collar, but this is a nasty machine that zaps the dog when it barks. They SAY it doesn't hurt, but try strapping it to your wrist and making a loud sound into it. In a lot of people I've known that first zap results in a loud cussword, which of course zaps them again.

you could try punishing him like by making him go in the other room and laying down or if you give him treats don't give him any if he keeps barking at the people. I have a pom and she does that too I make her go in the other room and lay down and she become quiet and lately she hasn't barked very much when people come over. Only when they knock or ding the door bell or just walked in.

I've got one too. She's done the same thing ever since we've had her. She'll be 5 yrs old in Nov. We've tried the same things you have and let me tell ya' nothing works. Just gotta get used to it. We still love her even though she's got a loud mouth.-LOL-

Welcome to the world of owning a dachshund! They are infamous for vocalizing their opinion. If I were you, I would expect co-operation from my guests and ask them to bear with it, if they can't bear with it, then they can exit the same door than they entered!
