Why didn't you take your dog outside for his dump? You must take responsibility for your dog's behavior. You are the dog's leader. The dog needs to believe you are a good leader.

Everyday you need to take your dog out for exercise. A 30+ minutes walk is minimal. You lead and the dog follows for the first few minutes. Then you may let the dog to doggy things like pee, poop, smell things, etc. Then back to you lead, dog follows. A few minutes one and then a few minutes the other. A good walk can establish you as the leader in the dog's eyes.

Dogs are great companions, but both you and the dog have separate rolls to follow. You are always a leader and the dog always a follower. Leaders never beg. With my dog I always go out the door first, never my dog. If he wants out, he has to obey and wait a couple seconds for me to go first. It is so sweet to see him sit eagerly waiting his turn.

The TV show "The Dog Whisperer" is a great teacher on how to act around your dog. The show is very entertaining also.
