Visit someone who is in the hospital with lung cancer. Believe me, it will knock the sexiness right out of the habit. I've seen someone die from the disease, and it was excruciating.
There are many different motivations for quitting. Not everyone identifies with the same ones. It could be fear of the consequences. Desire to save money. Awareness of harm to others. Freedom from addiction. Wanting to please someone else.
You need to find the one that resounds with you. . .

My brother quit by going to a hypnotist. A guy comes around every year or so and does a big seminar. He also sells tapes that you play at night while you sleep. My brother quit for a couple of years, then started again. (Apparently with hypnotism, once you start again, you'll be back to your full habit within days.) After a year of smoking, he played the tapes and was able to quit again. He hasn't smoked in a couple of years.
Nearly forty years ago, my father quit a four pack a day habit just by deciding he was going to. He carried an open pack of cigarettes around with him for a month, and didn't smoke one.
(And don't kid yourself - you are addicted to the nicotine as surely as you are to the act. It's physiological - that's what nicotine does.)

I used to love my fags too.I smoked for almost nearly 17 years.I had to change alot of things when l gave up smoking.I was able to link my fags with something else ,for instance,my morning coffee with a smoke after every meal, used to smoke none stop with beer. When l gave up the fags,I gave up the morning coffee foe a while, sucked on a hard sweet after diner, and didn't drink beer.I drank something else that I hadn't tried before because it had no link to fags. After about 6 months,I started introducing back the coffee, but a different brand, and beer but a different brand. This worked like a charm for me and have been of the fags for almost 1 and half years. But to give up the fags and never look back, you have to be really mentally ready.Best of luck, hope it all goes well for you.

I stopped smoking years ago(14 yrs) and you just got to start thinking negative about it.I found out that everytime you smoke, for the duration of the cigarette your veins constrict and your body is deprived of oxygen the whole time your smoking. That was enough for me.I quit and once your in that mind set for years(that its bad)and you can't breathe. Its harder and harder to pick up that habit again.I even get sick from the smoke now from others.

All the people I have known that have stopped smoking, have just stopped smoking! No drugs, no tricks, just don't light up. I am a smoker, and know how hard that is unless you really do want to not smoke!

You have to find it disgusting and hate your self for doing it. Tour a hospital and see all the people with emphyzema. See a few anti-smoking movies.

Substitute an alternate behavior. Do something else that is ritualistic in nature, that you love to do. It takes time, but over time, it works.
