I have been applying for a police department and finished everything else needed but I failed the psych exam. I answered everythign honestly and I know that I would make a good cop. What could have held me back? Was the fact I was in the military and had combat experience an eliminator? Any advice or info is much appreciated.

If you answered the questions honestly then there s little you can do. The psych test is not a pass or fail test. It show tendencies and the employer choses to hire or not hire based on the report from the test evaluator. The other thing you might consider is your military background. If you were trained as an"eliminator" the hiring agency might have a problem with your ability to divide your military duty from civil duty. They can't afford to have the image of a "trained killer" patroling the streets.

I had to take a psych exam at the meps years ago. I had no issues taking it. Having combat experience should not effect your exam. It should be a plus being in the military and having experience like that. Your answers may have been all over the place, thats the only thing I can think of.

I have also taken the psych exam for the police dept.

Did you notice how they kept asking the same questions over and over again in different ways? This is a way of checking your honesty and consistently in answering questions.

They are also tying to filter out a certain personality type. They are trying to eliminate people who would be dangerous with a gun. The person who would be out there ego tripping with a hand piece.

They can also tell if people are second guessing the questions and trying to answer the questions a way that they "think" they should be answered.

You are more than entitled to a copy of the psych report.

If you served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan, that would be a few strikes against you - but not enough to disqualify you unless you developed a mental disorder while serving over there.

Maybe you are still harboring hostility toward the Iraquis for slaughtering 5000 people September 11th, 2001.

Hats off to you!!!! Just go to another jurisdiction and reapply. Don't give up! Maybe the next police department will give you a machete to chop the f****** heads off when you make a traffic stop.

If anyone has been psychologically disqualified from the police I would contact Rob Kronenberg www.lawenforcementpeptalk.com. He really helped a friend of mine get on the job.

I would think you could get a copy of the evaluation from that exam. Have you tried?

A tendency toward behavior that doesn't fit the norm, or the job description.

Think about the questions they asked you and your answers. You will find it there if that is the only thing holding you back.

depends what you answered. they take the whole test into consideration. they usually look for military experience so i doubt that would fail you.
