most food is made up of sugars. Glucose, fructose, etc. These are simply the basic building blocks of all carbohydrates. More importantly to weight loss, and general physical health, you want to avoid refined sugars such as breads and pastas.

Good rule of thumb when shopping is stay on the outside of the store.... ie go around the edges and avoid buying whats in the center rows. shift your diet to more fruits and vegetables and less processed foods like pastas and breads.

Good Luck

If you're trying to lose weight you're right to try to eliminate sugar, but since it is apparently not a matter of being a diabetic your approach to reducing/eliminating sugar doesn't have to be as extreme in terms of worry about what turns to sugar.

Still, I'm not second-guessing your wish to stop sugar.

There are foods and drinks with sugar in them (plain old sugar). Then there are fruits and fruit juices that have a different type of sugar, and that's no the refined sugar that's in, say, candy or cupcakes. Diabetics who are worried about sugar and their sugar levels, though, do have to be concerned about how much fruit they eat.

Then starches will get turned into sugar by your body, but that's in order for your body to be able to use it as energy. This is bread, crackers, pasta - anything that's a carbohydrate/starch.

Foods that are high in calories are generally the ones that high in sugar or starch. There are also calories from fat, and the nutrition label will tell you how many calories per serving of that food are from fat. Fat is a different thing, and while it may cause high calories those calories don't come from a sugar.

Refined sugar in foods is the thing that is the biggest and fastest cause of weight gain or lack of weight loss. Carbohydrates will cause weight gain too, but you have to eat more of them in order for that to happen.

The Atkins diet (whether its a good one or not) is based on eliminating most carbohydrates and eating only proteins (which often come with fat as well), and it is based on the principle that if you don't give your body carbohydrates it won't be able to turn any of them into sugar. Your body will then use its stored fat, and - voila - weight loss. Even this diet, though, must include a few carbohydrates of you can develope a serious condition, ketosis.

In short, proteins and fats don't turn into the the sugars you want to avoid. Vegetables and fruits generally aren't ever a problem when it comes to weight loss unless you were to, say, load up on tons of fruit juice each day.

Sugar comes into two forms: simple and complex. Simple sugar tastes sweet (fruit, milk, candies...) and complex sugar doesn't (pasta, oatmeal, bread etc...).

Simple sugar is bad for dieting because it creates "spikes" in your blood which make you feel good for a while, but then make you feel really hungry. Complex sugars are much better because they break down very slowly, creating a steady trickle of energy. I wouldn't recommend cutting out complex sugars. Eliminating simple sugars and lowering the total calorie consumption is enough.

BTW, other people here are confused about refined sugar. Refined sugar is the white granulated sugar you can buy at supermarket, and many products have it added. But bread and pasta DO NOT HAVE refined sugar. They may have refined flour, but that's a completely different thing.

all foods break down into glucose because it is our bodies source of energy. however, you can slow the process by eating high fiber, high quality real food such as brightly colored fruits, vegies, berries, high fiber, whole wheat, whole grain breads, pastas, cereals, oatmeal, tortillas, crackers, and soy products, lean proteins such as fish, chicken, ham, turkey, beans, peanut butter, nuts, and low/nonfat dairy products. avoid overly processed foods that include anything white...white bread, rolls, pizza crust, etc. they cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. eat occasionally. people give the potato a bad rap but it's what you put on the potato is what makes it so dense in calories. if you bake or steam it and add just a little flavoring, they are good for you. potatoes have both soluable and insoluable fiber and plenty of nutrients. make sure to exercise at least 4-5 days a week working up to an hour a day 5 days a week. your work outs should include both cardio and weight/resistance work. good luck

I would think it would be easier to reference them on the internet individually. For example, bread . . . what kind of bread, how much you can eat and burn off with activity, how much activity. Fruits, all are different. They are sugar, but good sugar, don't eat too much, but the body should have fruit, vegies, grains, etc. Some vegies that are starchy, same thing. So, type in Yahoo! bar, nutritional information on (example) corn. Or whatever food you are interested in. It'll get you the site you want. You would have to be more specific about which foods as opposed to asking so general a question. Too many answers, too little space.
