My boyfriend is here in Canada for a year with a work permit. I am considered a visitor, can't work or attend school for the year.

HolyMoly! What an opportunity! Don't you have ANY interests? Go learn a language! (You are in Canada so why not French?) Pick up a sport or two (ex. martial arts, rock climbing). Learn to play an instrument or re-vamp some skills with an instrument! Join a book club! Read! Write! Take courses through a community college or continuing education programme! Pottery!

Would you be happier if the only you could do was work? Brother...

We weren't there for so long a time, but my children learned to swim.

Find something you want to learn that is not part of school, or seek a way to be a volunteer, or take an online course. Research what there is to do where you are. You can even use the time to try things you ordinarily would not be interested in just to see if your interests are changing. Reading is a fine pasttime, too. You might be able to read all the books required for literature courses at many colleges...take notes.

Why can't you attend school? You just won't be eligible for the reduced fees for citizens or students on visas. Anyway, there is always a need for volunteers in the charitable organizations.

Plan your wedding. You'll either get a work permit or your boyfriend will freak and you can head back home.
