Has anyone tried a steriod injection for thyroidectomy scar to make it less visible? How effective it is?

may i recommend that you first try vitamin e. buy a bottle of vitamin e gel capsules and prick it with a clean sterile pin and squeeze some all over the scar. steroid injection will only last for a short time and the side effects of anything steroid are terrible. Steriod injections are used for a temporary reduction in swelling, not as a healing treatment.

there are also products on the market just for scars. your surgeon should have made his/her incision just above the collar bone so the scar is not so visible. are you a person that grows scars? some people do and the vitamin e will help.

another choice is Palmer's cocoa butter formula. Palmer's contains lots of vitamin e, not as grease or sticky and the straight vitamin e capsule.

it takes time but daily application will work. if no difference in a couple of months then see a dermatologist.

try wearing a light weight scarf or bandanna to cover.

keep the vitamin e oil away from clothing it will stain and you can't get it out easily, if at all.

P.S. just had a beauty mark taken from my neck where my doc is going to cut me for my upcoming thyroidectomy.

Scar is a physical defect and must be dealt with medically by a doctor. There are a few ways to deal with the scar

1) Cut away the scar and re-suture. Not very good if the patient scars easily in the first place as the re-suture will inevitably cause a new scar

2) Steroid injection - painful and slow. good for keloids

3) Laser ablation - good for mild scarring and not for thick keloids

Talk to your doctor about it...

Facial scars can be made much smaller after the initial scar is healed over. They cut it out and leave a hairline scar almost imperceptible.

Why would you want to put sterioids into your body???

I have a huge scar on my neck from spinal surgery. You get used to it.

And there are several expensive OTC that you could try. My hubby had surgery and the doctor said use Vitamin E to reduce the scarring as it healed.

steroid injection would not work for that.
