A family member I think has IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. She said she told the doctor she has a problem but they say they have to catch it in action. Or have to see it occur. Which I think is Foolish.

She can't travel long distances, for fear of having an incident. It doesn't seen to be caused only by food, because some times it happens and she hasn't even eaten anything.

She always would take Pepto Bismo or Milk Magnisum before going out, and I think, these medications have messed up her system even more.

If anyone has any tips on treatment or things I can do to help her solve the problem please let me know.

Thank You.

IBS is not just from the food you are eating now...it's what you have been eating for years...this didn't happen over night so it can't go away any time soon....she needs a strict diet change seriously no cheating....she also needs some medication to help while she is trying to change her eating habits...Pepto is not for IBS....this problem will controll her life for a while unless she makes serious changes and find a doctor that is whilling to help

Could be stress related. Also, if she's had a problem with her bowels before, she may get all worked up before going anywhere which in turn can cause a nervous stomach. What about trying some type of fiber like metamucil or citricel. It may take a couple weeks but could help her. As far as I know, there is no type of test that confirms this syndrome. It's giving the doctor your symptoms, etc. and they diagnose you. She may also want to make sure she doesn't have some type of "bug" causing her problem. She will have to "go" in a cup and take it to the lab for testing to rule out any other problems.

There is a condition called MCS, multiple chemical sensitivities. One symptom of it is bowel problems, and would be caused by certain foods, or things in the air (fragrances, etc.) Most commercially made food, or items cause a reaction, and junk foods. A whiff of second hand smoke can even cause the problems you describe. maybe you can learn more about it online. It's just a posibility, i am not a Doctor.

first i think she should see another doctor if their telling her they need to see it in action. IBS symptoms often improve with a high-fiber diet and fiber supplements that contain psylliym, atlthough at first, the increase in fiber can ,more bloating and distension. also your doctor will probably recommend that she screen her diet to identify and avoid foods that aggravate her symptoms. these may include coffee, fruit sugars, legumes, cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower). her doctor may prescribe an antispasmodic medication such as dicyclomine (bentyl) or hyoscyamine (levsin). her doctor may prescribe a mild laxative or a mild antidiarrheal agent, but this is not primary therapy. other treatments may include a tricyclic antidepressant, for depression and pain control, or a sedative drug for patients with anxiety. her doctor also may want her to try biofeedback. of concern is that some people, in an attempt to control their bowels or reduce stress, can become dependent on laxatives or tranquilzers. although these may help for limited periods, niether of these is a good long-term option for relieving their symptoms.
