"palestine" in those days was a roman province, a part of the empire. the jews were driven out, in effect. their alternatives, since they were badly "outgunned " was to remain and die in war, resisting the romans, or be peaceable "slaves". they travelled everywhere, and were treated kindly on occasion, but mostly as outsiders and outcasts. and, since always in the minority where ever they wandered, hard times lay ahead. for 2000 years. and still, today.
