how do i go about getting my son's father to relinquish his parental rights?

we live in the state of california and he wants nothing to do with our son.. he has asked me to take care of him on my own with out any help from him. what are the steps that i go through to have him relinquish his rights to protect us in the future?

I am in the same situation. I spoke with a lawyer , b/c my ex doesn't want to give up his right, but has had nothing to do with my 3 year old son..never even seen him. My lawyer said that I have to have someone else to step up to the plate and take the responsibility. I am now married and trying to save up enough money to pay for the lawyer to get this ball rolling, but I HIGHLY suggest a lawyer. Let someone else do all the dirty work. Each state is different, but there is a period of time where he is allowed to change his mind.
