I've been told by someone who's been in the process of a similar thing that you can't retrieve them. You have to reinstall them, and you may have to install the XP version of them.

Apparently, if you try installing the old version there's a chance they could work - and a chance they may not.

If you've re-installed the Operating System already, there is no way to retrieve your software. For future reference, XP has a feature which allows you to restore your computer to an earlier date and time before any issues have arisen. It's called 'System Restore'. Make sure it is on in your control panel under system. Even if you drive crashes this will boot under safe-mode. From now on you should back-up your files on a zip drive or external HD.

If the programs do not show up anymore this means that when you installed windows, the install process formatted your hard drive, thus erasing all information on it previously. So the programs are retrieve-able.

if you have not formatted the partition in which you installed xp then you can get the files using any file recovery softwares.

suppose you've formatted the partition while installing xp then you can use the boot disc of xp and choose ASR (Automated System Recovery) to create an image of the file that were lost while installing xp and then that image can be used to recover the files...

it depends on how you reinstalled XP. Whenever i do it, i always format, but first i save everything to another drive.

if you formated, you cannot do anything.
if you can go to My Computer then your C Drive, and then Program Files. see if any of the stuff is still their, if it is, you still have to reinstall the programs, but their data and history will still be their.

You can't. When you reinstalled windows from scratch your erased all those programs. You should have done a "repair Install" instead.
