Kim Gladney, 25, who lives in the complex, said she heard 10 shots ring out.

"After the first five, I knew something was wrong," she said as she stood just beyond the police barricades.

Anywhere else that would be such a strange thing to say, anywhere else a single shot means something is wrong.

In the USA 11,000 deaths by gunshot the rest of the OECD less than a couple of hundred many less than a hundred.

I read the same article and thought to myself, "My God!" I mean, wouldn't ONE shot be enough to upset someone? I lived in Detroit for a long time, and still live close by; whenever I hear a shot I remember days when that would not have been the case, when the toughest guy is school was rumored (no one knew for sure) to have a (God forbid!!) knife!!!

I read all these self-righteous "Americans" every night on Answers, bragging about how good we are in the world, how we're here to save others, etc. etc. And we can't even save ourselves from violence, can't even stop the flow of guns into this country (actually, I don't think we WANT to, it's big business for a lot of legitimate and illegitimate companies--and you know how we're into capitalism--at any cost!!!)

Canada, our lovely neighbor, is next to the US in incidences of gun violence...and they are sooooo far away from us on a graph that you could float a boat in the distance. And other "Western" countries have even less!! It just makes me sick!

Thank you for pointing this out. I'm getting so cynical when it comes to changing the NRA-minded jerks in this country that I didn't even turn my disgust into a question. Glad you did!

I don´t think that is a USA exclusive problem, violence has been gaining force as the last 30 years has passed, only to make the whole world a great place to develope a very deep sense of constant paranoia. Take a look at the situation of most big cities in latinamerica, just to stay in the continent, only Caracas has a rate between 50 to 70 violent deads during a normal weekend. And let´s not forget how people have been killing each other mercyless for the last 4000 years in the midle east. Perhaps violence is just a human condition that we have not evolved from the begining of mankind.

Where I live, just about everyone that I know owns a firearm including myself. I've lived here just over ten years and I've Never heard a single gunshot.

So I guess you and Michael "Fat Boy" Moore will have to come up with something better

Yup. The USA has a problem with violence. I have lived here for almost ten years and I am lucky enough not to have anything happen to me, but I still carry mace when I enter a city. I don't think that would help me if I was shot at though.

Indiscrimate firing is common because there are lot of guns being handled improperly and are not registered. Even when the bullet and the victim is examined, a gun and its user cannot be traced because many guns are untraceable due to no records.

Yeah, like in Iraq, or Lebanon, or Israel. I think something is wrong if I hear a fist fly. It all depends on where you're located!
And numbers mean nothing unless you are talking percentages.

Unfortunately many criminals have guns, but taking away our right to have them (guns) is not the answer. I believe that everyone should carry a gun, that would keep the criminals at bay.

Bet people say "after I heard the second bomb go off I knew there was trouble."
