Throughout history many used Christanity to futher their cause, be it political, military, governmental etc. Some attempt to make reference to these historic figures as to prove the lack of credibilty in Christianity. Jesus said you shall know them by their fruits. Many even go as far as to hold up Adolph Hitler as a prime example of a Christian, of course they are not intellectually honest. Hitler said Christanity was the cancer of humanity on Oct 13 1941. At the same time he is not an example of a typical atheist as well, the truth is he was pure evil. The true test of a "Christian" is their fruits. If you see murder, rape, torture, fallen pastors etc..we must ask ourselves if they are "really" typical examples of Christians. We can easily find examples (unfairly) of ANY belief to un fairly characterize anyone. Hitler loved German Sheperds...does than mean dog lovers are evil?
I can point to dozen of horrible atheist from the past...does that mean everyone is exactly like them?

Yes there are many people that have used the name of Jesus to perpetuate wars, greed and killing of innocent people. It is being done today by some of the large visible ministries. If interested you should do a study on Jesus and war and the followers of Jesus and war. You will be surprised to learn that it was a good while after Christ Jesus departed that his followers were involved in politics and adopted the doctrine of war being OK.

Of course there should be an olive branch of peace between professed Christians and non-religious people.
As soon as Christianity acknowledges that neither it nor its practitioners have any 'inside track' or 'special status' better than good people on this earth who are NOT believers in their particular set of tenets, we can talk.
Because the heinous Christian individuals, groups, nations (whatever) have, over time, killed and tortured millions of people accused of being witches, scientists, gays, heretics, and WHATEVER.
So, as soon as you're willing to withdraw the support that the violent Christians use with impunity (you know--you all are special and can get totally absolved of whatever wrong you do) I'll be more than happy to welcome Christianity and its practitioners into the civilized world.
Meanwhile, consider yourself partly responsible and an heir to a sordid legacy.
Sorry . . . .

Hilter was not an atheist. Hilter had a christian upbringing. If he was an atheist, why would he have had so much resentment against Jews? Why would he have cared?
And those people who murdered and tortured in the name of religion firmly believe they were Christians and they were doing God's work.

Excellent point, everyone take note. So many say they are Christians even on this site and go on with beliefs and values that are not at all in accord with Christianity. There are two major cults in Canada whose adherents call themselves Christians

The first thing you should review are the words of warning from Jesus himself to his disciples. Luke 21:8-11 He replied, "Watch out that you are not deceived, For many will come claiming, 'I am He'. and 'The time is near'. Do not follow them.............Matthew 24:4-5
Jesus answered, "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming 'I am the Christ' and will deceive many.......
Think of his words seriously and think deeper. There is no underlying tone. He is directly stating religions will rise using his name and saying he is the Christ and he meant, no one should believe it, because they are deceivers. Count how many religions in the world are using his name and keep on saying that the world is about to end?
He did not say, "after us many will follow and use my name" he immediately said that "Many will come..." So, do not just say many "falsely use the name of Christianity". . Everything is false from the very beginning. I am sorry about that. But that is the reason why we are so divided in our thinking because we are so deceived. The more it has been made worse when we regarded him as Son of God first, and now he is Becoming God to us already...

No, every belief system, including the Atheists (and Christians), has very bad examples. Because of them, the rest are automatically assumed to be the same. Islam has it the worst because of radicals and extremists.

Sadly yes. Also people who claim to be Christians who really don't believe in the divinity of Christ or His Unity with the Father and Spirit.

I whole-heartedly agree. Manipulative people will use anything in their desire to control other people.
Blasted cross-dressing wolves! By disguising themselves as "sheep", they seek to take advantage of others for their own advantage, and often succeed. That is the sad part.

what exactly is your point? there is no perfect christian. we can all find people to hold up in ridicule from any religion, or lack of religion. when we do, that makes us just as bad as the people we show contempt to
