There are wire haired and rough coats which have a longer hair than the smooth coat JRT's. By the way, they are now called Parson Russell Terriers by the AKC.

Jack Russell are also called Parson Russell Terrier and yes they are a breed. They were first bred in Europe and then in the States. You can find Jacks with rough ( which could seem a little longer) and smooth coat. Depends what you mean by long. more than an inch NO!

Check this site.www.dogbreedinfo.com/jackrussellterrier.htm

I own a smooth Jack Russell

I have a Jack Russel Terrier that is a fully registered pup. She has what the breeder called Wire Hair. It is a little longer than most Jack Russel Breeds. I really like her hair its really cute.

Coat
Smooth--Double-coated. Coarse and weatherproof. Flat but hard, dense and abundant, belly and undersides of thighs are not bare. Broken--Double-coated. Coarse and weatherproof. Short, dense undercoat covered with a harsh, straight, tight jacket which lies flat and close to the body and legs. There is a clear outline with only a hint of eyebrows and beard. Belly and undersides of thighs are not bare. Coat does not show a strong tendency to curl or wave. No sculpted furnishings. The terrier is shown in his natural appearance not excessively groomed. Sculpturing is to be severely penalized. Faults--Soft, silky, wooly, or curly topcoat. Lacking undercoat.

Might be a breeding issue. I have seen people do this to make the dog seem to be rare- thus selling for more $$ when in fact it is something you DON'T want to breed into a pedigree.

There is no long haired Jack Russel, but there is a wired haired Jack Russel.

The wired haired Jack Russel still has kinda short hair, but it is longer than the smooth coated one.

They are not referred to as "long haired" but rather they are called "rough coats" and yes, these dogs actually exists and are very popular little dogs. (I think these "rough coats" are actually a little cuter than the smooth coated jacks, however both are very cute little dogs).
