Got our first flat tire today at 23000 miles. Loosened the lugs, removed the small spare, and jacked up the car. After removing the lugs, the wheel would not come off. There was another bolt in the center of the hub--no tool supplied to remove it. After getting a tool to remove the bolt we found another lock underneath it. We called Volvo's 24 hr service line, and they said it had to be towed to the dealer.

What in the world is there even a spare tire in there for if a person can't change the tire without having it towed to the dealer? And what if I want to go to a different tire store to get replacements? If only the dealer has the tool to remove the lock, then we HAVE to go to them?

P.S. I will ask the dealer, but it is Sunday night here. Not much to do but sit and stew until tomorrow morning.

The bolt in the center has nothing to do with the wheel, the wheel only fastened by those five or four lug nuts (bolts) - you can find exact instructions in your owner's manual. If the wheel is not coming off, it's just got sized on the hub because of some corrosion inside. This usually happens with alloy wheels that haven't been rotated (they supposed to be rotated every other oil change). Try to kick the wheel gently all around if it won't get loose, install the lug nuts back and tow it to a garage. Good luck!

Actually I have never heard of this before, a friend of mine has a volvo s40 and there is no problem changing the tire. Could it be something someone added aftermarket?

P.S
I found a link for you.
