treacle is the best substitute and almost similar. however golden syrup or maple syrup or honey can be substituted, but the overall flavour and color of the ribs will be changed. molassas and tracle are dark and have a deep, burnt sugar taste that give a richness to the recipe, whereas honey or golden or maple syrup will yield a lighter colored final result with a more aromatic flavour, without the deep undertones.

Honey is the best substitute. Try adding a little DARK brown sugar to help deepen the taste.
Dark Karo would be my second choice for substitution.
Do yourself a favor...the next time you pass a roadside fruit stand in the south....try to stock up on the Ribbon Cane Molasses. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSING :)

dark corn syrup or honey, but it will be a lighter flavor with honey esp. If it calls for sugar, substitute brown sugar, which has a little molasses. Heck, send someone out to the store to pick some up!

Almost anything would be good in BBQ sauce! Consider using equivalent quantities of:
Honey
Karo Syrup
Pancake Syrup
Grape Jelly
Apple Jelly
Pineapple Juice
Sweet & Sour Sauce (bottled stuff)

Instead of trying something that you aren't sure about (substitutions have a way of jacking up your food), try using what you already have in your pantry.
The website below has some great non-BBQ recipes, as well as recipes for marinades and rubs.

Brown sugar, and some liquid: bourbon, beer, cider vinegar. That's what I put in my bbq sauce for sweetness. Or if you have it handy, some maple syrup.

Maybe some brown sugar. I believe it contains molasses (and sugar).
