“Heat” is the word used to describe a female dog’s menses cycle. Usually the first signs include a swelling of the vulva, clear vaginal discharge, restlessness, bloody discharge, and more demanding of your attention. The first part of the “heat” cycle lasts anywhere from five to fourteen days, depending on the dog breed and size. During this initial period, the female tends to repel any interest from male dogs. Once the next stage starts, you will find her doing her best to get ANY male dog interested in her. Our female dogs tend to run our one unaltered male dog ragged when they start their cycles. Our girls tend to cycle as a group, with one starting about a week or so after the other. By the time the last female completes the cycle, the male dog has lost a pound or two from all the work. If the female dog does not mate, she will enter the final stage of the heat cycle. Her body spends the next six to ten weeks figuring out that it is not pregnant. She may experience a “false pregnancy” where you may notice swelling of the teats, mothering of stuffed toys, and other behavior otherwise consistent with a pregnant dog.
I hope that helps!

Do you mean when does a dog come in heat? Usually between 6 mo to a year, altho it could happen a little earlier or later. Dogs should not be bred their first heat cycle. Wait until 18 mo to 2 years.

Unless you are operating a responsible breeding program, there is no good reason to avoid spaying your dog. She will be happy and possibly healthier if you spay her as this procedure can reduce her risk for certain cancers, diabetes, mange and epilepsy. If you spay your dog before her first heat cycle, her risk of developing breast cancer is .05%. In an unspayed dog, that risk is 8%. Think of your dog's health, as well as your own convenience.
These days, spaying a female dog is a common 1-day abdominal surgery in which a veterinarian removes the dog's uterus and ovaries.
If you own an unspayed female dog, chances are she will come into heat for the first time at about 6-9 months of age and about twice a year thereafter. usually spring April through June then fall August though September.. To avoid the hassle of handling female dogs in heat, you can have your dog spayed for a very reasonable cost and this will prevent spotting in the house as well as the possibility of unwanted pregnancy. Many pet over-population advocacy groups offer low-cost spay and neuter clinics. If cost is an issue for you, search these out and see what they can do to help you.
The best time to spay your female dog is before she comes into heat the first time but after she has some adult growth. Generally about 6 months of age is a good time to shoot for, but check with your vet and see what he recommends for your dog's breed.
