I found a Chihuahua about 4 months ago shes about a year old (what the vet said )and now she is officailly ours. she loves me and is very used to being here but she wont play with toys and will hardly play at all. most of the day she sleeps and lays down. a take her for walks regularly but she is still very boring. im starting to train her and she seems to be a fast learner she even repsonds to treats but i cant get her to play with a toy or play with me. im wondering what i can do to make her more active and more playful she is still quite young she shouldn't be like this, should she? Although it might be that she takes after my 13 yr old dalmation who only sleeps because shes so tired, but im not sure. So people please help me

Oh And im thinking she did come from an abusive home the first month we had her she was scared of feet i would try to stand near her and before my foot touched the ground she would move away she is better now but since there has been times where i forget where she is and step on her on accident she would get a little scared for a while .

I think you hit the nail on the head so to speak when you said your chihuahua, though not old, is probably following after your 13 year old Dalmatian. She is used to being around a very sleepy dog and knows no different. I would say if you have gotten your new doggie a good check-up and is in good health, then I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe it would be a great idea to have her socialize with other dogs like the friend's dogs and all. That will help teach her there is time for play and have fun and time to relax and chill. She may be just an easygoing dog, good tempered too! Ya don't know because you didn't buy her from a breeder or even get her from a shelter but you found her! Or maybe she found you? ; ) I'm sure things will be fine, give her time. The next thing you know, you'll be writing, how can I get my dog to rest, sleep? She just keeps going and going......lol!!! Good luck! Congrats to you for taking in a stray dog! : )

I adopted a dog when she was a year and a half. She had not been touched for the first 6 months of her life and then from 6 months until the time I adopted her she was at a no kill shelter. That was almost 2 years ago. In the past couple of months she has started playing with toys, with the help of my other dog, and playing with me. She won't run around and play with me, but she likes to play with my hands the way her and my other dog play (play biting and stuff)
My point is...you never know what happened to her before coming to your house. It will take some time for her to adjust...more than just 4 months.
Good luck!

You don't know this dog's history, so you can't know what the first year of her life was like. Something may have happened to her, or she's just a very quiet dog.
You said the vet told you how old she was so I guess you had her to the vet and he found she was healthy, right?
You just have to take her like she is. She does enjoy her training you said so be happy with that. Not all dogs play with toys and she will likely play with you when she gets to know you better. Give her time.

It sounds like she was probably not treated well before you found her. She probably spent the majority if her time crated and did not have toys to play with and people to love her. Just give her as much love and attention as you can and she should come around.
You could also get another chihuahua. They love having another chi for a playmate. It would probably bring out her playful side.

Your new addition may have come from a abusive home. We found a little chihuahua too, and she didn't want anyone petting her head. A friend of mine, who just left a abusive husband, took to her, so they began to learn together to trust again. Your baby may have been beaten or spanked if she got playful. Just a thought.
My daughter's new puppy needs drugs, He's so hyper, wish we could take some of his spunk and give to yours! Getting her someone to play with or at least watch and show her it is ok to place sounds like a very good idea...Just keep on loving whether is ever playful or not...my daughter wanted a lap dog, want to switch? Good luck with the new baby!
God bless us all............

She just needs to be motivated Try a ball that you can put treats in or a bottle with something in it that rattles
lol on days you are tired you will love the fact that she is a quiet dog

Try a toy with a squaker. Reward her with a treat everytime she responds. Talk to her with a happy voice when she does anything good.

It sounds like its going to take a long time for her to open up to you but she will right when your not expecting it.If you are really worried you can push for a bllod test to check her better to make sure shes not ill.I think its just going to take her awhile to open up.Sleep with her alot and talk to her during the day alot
