All docked tail dogs should have their tails docked between days 3-5 after whelping/birth by a veterinarian only. This is when the nerve endings have not developed completely in the tail and cause minimal pain and risk of neurological damage to the spinal cord. Any time after this is risky and most vets will not do it.

Tail docking is done by a veterinarian at 3 days of age. If you already had a female and pups die, are you aware of the cause? Did she receive medical attention? If not, what's to prevent this tragedy from repeating? Make sure that dog is getting routine veterinary checkups throughout her pregnancy. Schedule and ultrasound and discuss the possibility of emergency c-section with your vet. Ultrasound is very important. Knowing how many pups there are when your dog starts whelping can literally save her life. Playing the "is she done yet" guessing game puts her life at risk and dogs frequently die because of it. If you don't know how many pups are there then you cannot be truly sure if she's done with labor or if there's still one (or more) stuck inside, which WILL result in a systemic, fatal infection. Perhaps this is why your previous dog died. As for a load of pups nobody wants, a responsible breeder has potential homes for all pups in the near future before the mother is even bred. Often times there's a waiting list. Perhaps you should put breeding on hold until you have completely familiarized yourself with ethical breeding practices that do not put your poor female's life at risk, as well as the local laws on ear cropping or tail docking. Also, never go through with a mating unless both dogs have been tested for genetic conditions that occur in the breed and both dogs have been STD checked. Never go through with a mating if you cannot provide homes for all pups in a potentially large litter.

the best thing to do is to take the litter to the vet and have them do it because if you do it the tail will get infected. but the age to dock the tail for your boxer is usually when they are born because at that age they can heal fast and the pain is not that bad for them.

3-5 days. You must be one heck of a backyard breeder if you want to do it yourself and you do not even know what age to do it!!!!!!!!
More pooply raised, bred, and cared for puppies is just what the world needs!!!!

It doesn't sound like I am the one who is stupid!!!!!!! I would not breed a dog if I was totally clueless!!!!!!!!! This is the very most basic knowledge for breeding this breed. Are you too cheap to get the litter to a vet and get it done????? Are you too lazy to do a 2 minute search on the web YOURSELF so you would not ask a stupid question here???????????????

Your vet should do it at 3-4 days old.

I always thought it was right after they were born...within a few days. The first poster is right though...a professional has to do it or it is considered animal cruelty by animal control because of the methods used to do it at home.
