I have a business plan ready to go, the business plan is set, with the exception of paid employees. In a non profit business can you pay employees and yourself, or is that illegal? I have asked people, and get different answers.
Anyone have any good books on the Non Profit matter either, it is a homeless shelter I am starting up, and I am rather excited about it.

Hey, good luck! My husband has wanted to do this for years, but we've just never got it together. He wants to do a day center. Gee, you could house everyone at night and breakfast in morn, and we could have someplace for them to hangout during the day.
Have you talked to directors of other shelters? We worked at a shelter for a few months and they paid us, but it wasn't a regular paycheck. It was called a stipend and the checks came from other businesses/people. I suppose because it was a nonprofit. We also received free room and board. Again, good luck. Sounds like a great thing you're doing.

Yes, you pay yourself and employees, any net profit goes to charity. Get yourself a bookkeeper to figure out how to get the pay down and how much will actually go to charity. What are you doing/selling/making?

Check out your local library also get involved in groups that meet in your area to discuss the same topic. There are plenty of them around and they like to bounce ideas and things off one another.
