Both.

"So if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life injured than to have two hands and go to hell, to the fire that cannot be put out. In that place, worms never die, and the fire is never put out. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. In that place, worms never die, and the fire is never put out. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell. In that place, worms never die, and the fire is never put out." (Mark 9:43-48)

And

"The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather from his kingdom everything that causes others to sin and those who practice lawlessness and they will throw them into a blazing furnace. In that place there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 13:41-42)

And

"In that place there will be crying and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves being driven away on the outside." (Luke 13:28)

The unrighteous dead will feel pain in the body, and in the mind, knowing that they rejected the One who could have saved them from their torment.

Both. There will be fire, as Jesus said (physical pain). Mental -probably knowing where you messed up - individuals will provide their own mental pain.
It's more the fact that individuals in hell, find out GOD is real and that their actions while alive lead to them being in hell. (Can't remember rich man/beggar story - insert here)
While alive people use or misuse their free will, not fully understanding there is an accounting - even if given the truth, the individuality of each of us makes this such a personal trial.

Some people who have had near death experiences say that the pain in Hell is 1000 times worse than having your leg cut off and the pain covers your entire body. And knowing you are cut off from anything you knew before would be bad also. So I would say yes it is both physical and mental. Would you consider being thrown into a pit of fire and being burned forever painful?

In Luke 16:24-25, it describes both physical and mental torture. You will be suffering mentally because you will remember all the times you failed to accept Christ and follow him. You will also remember the times you caused other people to stumble. You will also have physical pain, the bible mentions being tormented by a flame.

Holly, this is beginning to look like a fishing expedition for answers to next week's Bible study. Have you gone thru The Books yet to find insight? Clue: my hell is watching unfathomable ignorance on the internet.

the thing is that you are asking a spiritual question that can only have a scientific explaination, so i will indulge your curiousity. the pain would be physical, however knowing the human anatomy, pain travels through neurological gateways in your body. assuming that your body is still whole during the torture in hell, then the pain gateways would be overloaded, therefore causing mental pain along with the physical.

Burns and pain sensation

Allah (Glory is to him) says:
"Those who reject our signs, we shall soon cast in to the fire, as often as their skins are roasted through, we shall change them for fresh skins, that they may taste the penalty for Allah is Exalted in power, wise" Al- Nesa'a chapter, verse:56

The above verse illustrates why Allah changes the unbelievers burnt skin by another to feel the most torment during their existence in the hell… so what is the secrete of this.

i don't think it will be physical, since it is not a bodily place, it is an afterlife
