Lou Gherig's Disease, also known as ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is what killed my aunt a few years ago. You can look at some Websites, but don't go jumping to any conclusions. There seem to be a lot of symptoms, and a few new treatments. Only a doctor can make the diagnosis. Recently they have discovered a gene responsible for it. (Clinical trials info is listed in the lsat Website posted).

"The symptoms of ALS include muscle stiffness, muscle twitching, muscle spasms, muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, weight loss, bowel problems and fatigue. Bladder control remains intact, as does sexual functioning. The mind also remains intact, and there is no deterioraton of mental ability.

The diagnosis of ALS may take several months because early symptoms may be similar to other neuromuscular diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Disease, which must first be ruled out.

Although ALS can affect people of any age, the average age at onset is 55. It occurs twice as often in men as in women. There is also a genetic link in that 10% percent of ALS cases are hereditary. There are more incidences of ALS on the island of Guam, and amongst the veterans of Operation Desert Storm.

Cause of ALS

The actual cause of ALS remains unknown. However, there are several theories presently being put forward. Among these are: An excess of the brain chemical called glutamate in the motor neurons, an excess of free radicals which damage the nerve cells, viral infections, physical trauma, and environmental toxins such as toxic metals and chemicals.

A Ray of Hope

Given the above statistics, it is easy to feel completely hopeless and discouraged when confronting a terminal illness such as Lou Gehrig's Disease. There have been, however, reports of some incredible turnabouts in the progression of this disease, to the point where the individuals in question no longer consider themselves to be victims of ALS, or even to have the actual disease."

You mean Lou Gerig? Try taking vitamins with glyconutrients in them. Glyconutrients have been studied for about 55 years now. Lots of research out there but Mannatech is the only company that has ever been invited to speak in front of the US congress on their studies and products. Google them. I wouldn't worry about the disease unless a doc diagnoses you. Good luck.
