while your child is growing his body requires more sleep to recover from the trials of the day , as a baby he slept a good proportion of the day and night away and in his early years he will need more sleep that lets say a child in his mid teen years . so its up to you to judge the amount of sleep he need , I'm no doctor but I think its about 9 to 10 hours minimum. my kids at that age were in bed at 8 pm but that was my choice . others say later or earlier :but I liked to settle in with my wife and catch a movie at that time and it worked out fine for our kids they never woke over tired the next morning

When we were younger, it seemed our parents thought we needed more sleep, because my bed time was 7:30. Obviously times have changed and I think this decision should be based on how the child handles it. A nine year old is pretty independent in this day and age. I have an 8 yr old who has a bed time of 9:00 on weekdays and 10:00 on weekends. But he can handle this, meaning he wakes up in a good mood, isn't cranky during the day, etc. If he had too much sleep, then I'd have the problems with him. When my 12 yr old was 9, he had to have an 8:00 bedtime...if he did't get enough sleep, he was a complete grouch, and impossible to deal with. So although you shoot for a goal, it might not always work. Make it reasonable. Explain to your child why it is, and then see what his/her argument is. If he has a valid complaint, extend it a little and see if he/she is able to cope with it. There is no exact science to this and we all have different internal clocks. I feel your pain, school is going to be starting too and I'm getting the same argument from my boys as I get them back into the normal routine.

I have a 9 & 11 yr old and they both go to bed at 9:30 on school nights. They have to get up at 6:30 and that's 9 hours of sleep, plenty for their age.

I have a little brother who is 7, and a little sister who is 6.
They go to bed around 9:30 in the summer, and around 8:30 during school.

[For the heck of it, I'm 18 and sometimes I'll go to bed at 9!]

in summer i would say 11 is the latest, but make sure he has a week or so before school when he goes to bed at 9:30 to get used to. So, 9:30 during school.

My son is 9. He goes to bed at 8:30pm and gets up at 6:00am. Children his age need between 9 and 10 hours of sleep a night. This gives him 9 and a half.

well at 9 years old i would think bed time should be about 8-30 to 9-00. UNLESS he wants to watch a film or do games in his room then it would be sooner. about 7-30 to give the film chance to finish b4 bed time.
