First they profit from your enjoyment. Taxes on alcoholic beverages are very high. Then they fine you for drunk driving. Win Win situation for them.

The federal govt. probably doesn't make a profit, but the local governments probably do. They tax the alcohol heavily, then they get a federal subsidy for housing a "Prisoner" over the weekend when they catch you driving home, then you incur fines to the tune of THOUSANDS of dollars for each offense. My brother-in- laws' 5th dui cost him $36,000. However, I highly doubt that any extra money could be called profit... they add the money to the budgets and waste it like most of the rest of our tax dollars.

That's pretty far-fetched. There wouldn't be campaigns against it if people were making money from it. Taguchi's Loss Theroem can be applied to these types of questions and it basically will tell you that it is a monetary loss to society.

On the other side they lose money from all the people injured from drunk driving that they have to pay for.
